I feel like my life is a bad country song

My son was in a pretty bad car crash on June 2. He turned left off a side street onto a residential street and another car (ironically, some of our friends) hit him head on. My son says that the other car was speeding, but I don't know. He had to go to the hospital via ambulance. He was pretty banged up on the head, arms, and legs. The airbags deployed (thank God), but I don't think he was wearing a seat belt. One of the nurses in the ER mentioned that he thought my son had been drinking, but his blood tests came back clean.

The car was totalled. The insurance company paid off pretty quickly, but now I'm afraid that they'll up his rates to the sky or drop us.

Maybe this was the shock that he needs to get his life back on track. I felt like I aged 40 years that day. He's grounded from driving until further notice.

Yesterday, when my son and I got home, he ran into the house to get some clothes to spend the night at a friend's house. The next thing I know, he's about in hysterics. The left ear of my furry child, Wylie, was swollen like nothing I've ever seen before. Of course, it's 6:45 and the vet closes at 7, so we make a mad dash to the vet. As we're waiting for the vet, my son is freaking out that Wylie is going to die. We've lost two other dogs since my son was born.

It turns out that it was an aural hematoma. Wylie's was swollen a lot more than the picture in the link. The vet recommended surgery, so we left her there Friday night so that they could do the surgery first thing in the morning. I picked her up this afternoon and the swelling has gone down a lot. They put a drain in her ear and I have to "milk" her ear twice a day to get the remaining fluid out. My son is really squeamish and I'm only a little less so when it comes to blood and bodily fluids. In two weeks, she goes back to get the drain out. Final vet bill: $288.
